About these rates

Rates are the European Central Bank (ECB) euro reference rates, published once per ECB working day (around 16:00 CET), passed through frankfurter.app. The Rates as of date is the ECB rate date, and the Fetched stamp shows when we last retrieved them.

ECB reference rates are mid-market reference figures — they are not the rate your bank, card issuer, or FX broker will give you. Retail and commercial transactions include a spread and may add fees, so your effective rate will differ.

Cross-rates between two non-base currencies are derived from each currency's rate against the base. Use these figures for planning and comparison only; confirm the applicable rate at the time of your transaction.

When live rates are unavailable we say so and let you enter your own rate — we never present a stored number as if it were live.

Why does the exchange rate matter for cross-border freight quotes?
Many Canada-US freight rates are quoted in US dollars, but Canadian carriers pay their drivers, fuel, and fixed costs in Canadian dollars. When the USD/CAD rate changes by even a few cents, the CAD margin on a US-dollar load can swing materially -- a 1-cent move on a $2,000 USD load equals a $20 CAD change. Shippers pricing cross-border freight in their home currency need to account for current exchange rates to compare carrier quotes accurately.
What exchange rate source does this tool use?
The Currency Calculator uses live rates from the Frankfurter API, which publishes daily rates based on European Central Bank (ECB) reference data. Rates update once per business day. For real-time spot rates used in financial settlement, always confirm with your bank or payment provider, as settlement rates can differ from the ECB reference by 0.5-2% depending on the institution and transaction size.
Should I quote cross-border freight in CAD or USD?
There is no universal rule, but the common convention is: Canadian carriers often quote Canada-origin loads in CAD and US-destination loads in USD. US carriers typically quote in USD regardless of origin. As a shipper, requesting quotes in your billing currency simplifies accounting, but compare all quotes on a common basis (convert to one currency) before making a carrier selection. Specify the currency clearly in your rate confirmation to avoid billing disputes.
