Transit
Risk Score
Assess weather, theft, border delay, temperature, and capacity risks for your freight lane — with specific contingency recommendations for each risk factor.
Understanding Transit Risk Factors
Weather Risk
Mountain passes (BC, AB), prairie blizzards, Atlantic storms, and northern conditions create weather-related delays, accidents, and road closures. Highest in winter, especially on BC's Coquihalla, Rogers Pass, and Yellowhead corridors.
Cargo Theft
Canada's cargo theft hotspots are concentrated in the ON-QC corridor, particularly the GTA and Laval areas. Cannabis, electronics, pharma, and alcohol consistently rank as highest-risk commodities. Truckload theft increased 25% in Canada from 2021–2024.
Border Delay
Canada–US border crossings average 1–3 hours under normal conditions but can extend to 12+ hours during high-volume periods, document errors, or secondary inspection. Pre-transmitted documentation reduces risk significantly.
Temperature Exposure
Fresh produce, pharmaceuticals, and cannabis are most vulnerable. Summer heat and winter freeze create risks on long-haul or multi-stop routes. Reefer equipment mitigates most temperature risk when properly pre-cooled.
Capacity & Demand
Q4 (October–January) is the highest-demand period in Canadian freight. Spot capacity tightens significantly around Christmas and Thanksgiving. Spring rate corrections can create surges in Q1–Q2.
About this tool
What it calculates
Assesses weather, cargo theft, border delay, temperature exposure, and capacity risks for a Canadian freight lane, and provides specific contingency recommendations for each risk factor.
Who it's for
Shippers and logistics managers planning a new lane or a shipment during a high-risk season, and carriers assessing route risk.
What you'll need
Origin and destination provinces, commodity type, shipment value, temperature sensitivity, and desired transit days.
How to use the result
Use the risk score to identify which risks require contingency planning — whether that's cargo insurance, a temperature recorder, or an alternate crossing. High-scoring risks should be addressed before booking.
Key assumptions
Risk factors reflect historical patterns for Canadian lanes (weather, theft, border volume). Actual risk on a given day depends on conditions at booking time.
