How is remaining shelf life at delivery calculated?
The tool uses a Q10-adjusted biological model: every 10 degrees Celsius above the commodity's optimal storage temperature doubles the rate of quality degradation. It combines this temperature factor with your transit duration, loading and unloading delays, number of stops, and starting age to estimate shelf life consumed during transport.
What is chilling injury in produce freight?
Chilling injury occurs when temperature-sensitive produce is held below its safe minimum storage temperature but above freezing. Symptoms include browning, pitting, water-soaked lesions, and accelerated decay — often not visible until after delivery. Tropical commodities (bananas, avocados, mangos) are especially vulnerable. The tool flags chilling risk when your reefer setpoint is below the commodity's safe minimum.
How does ethylene affect mixed produce loads?
Ethylene is a ripening gas emitted by many fruits and vegetables. High ethylene producers (apples, avocados, tomatoes) can accelerate ripening and spoilage in ethylene-sensitive commodities (leafy greens, broccoli, carrots) co-loaded in the same trailer. The tool warns when your selected load includes incompatible ethylene producers and sensitive commodities.
What reefer temperature setpoint should I use?
Set the reefer to the commodity's recommended storage temperature range — not your own preference. Most tropical fruits prefer 10-15 degrees C; most vegetables and stone fruits prefer 0-4 degrees C. Mixed loads may require a compromise temperature. The tool will flag commodities at risk if the setpoint falls outside their safe range.
How does pre-cooling affect shelf life?
Pre-cooling (field heat removal) before loading is one of the highest-impact factors in produce shelf life. Loading warm product into a reefer does not cool it quickly — the reefer maintains temperature but cannot rapidly pull heat from a full load. Pre-cooled product that enters the trailer already at storage temperature retains significantly more shelf life than product loaded at ambient temperature.
